WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT PRAYER FROM
PLAYING IN THE PERCUSSION SECTION

1.              Wait, count, and pay attention.

2.              Better to come in at the wrong place than to be frightened of taking a risk.

3.              People who don’t understand what you’re doing think it’s easy.

4.              People who don’t understand what you’re doing think it’s just noise.

5.              Sometimes it’s not about doing something, it’s about not doing something.

6.              There aren’t a lot of solos, but when they come you’re very exposed.

7.              And when you do solo:  that’s the time you can play quietly.

8.              Prayer, like playing the triangle, is harder than it looks – but not much.

9.              Most of the time, your job is make others sound good.

10.          There’s too much going on to get bored.

11.          Mute the sound when your part is done.

12.          It’s not how hard you hit the head, but how well.

13.          Timing is everything.
